Something to add to the ongoing conversation about the all male
chapters...
The resolution which called for the formation of a committee to study the
issue of the all-male chapters (actually, all single-sex chapters, as the
issue really deals with that) also asked for a progress report to be
published in the issue of the T&T due to come out early next year. I'm
sure we are all eagerly awaiting fiding out what's been going on.
The committee was asked to seek opinions from any who wished to give, as
well as do extensive research about the legal and philosophical issues at
stake. For info of what exactly went on, I refer you to the posts made on
Jan. 2 and 3 of this year: Bill Smith (a member of chapter ops) posted a
comprehensive report, and others followed.
I feel it's very important, when discussing the all-male issue, to take a
step back and look at the larger issues involved. This is what gave the
chapter ops committee pause, and led directly to the resolution we
proposed. It was our intent to facilitate unbiased information gathering,
and to have the committee come back to the '98 convention with reasonable,
well-thought-out resolutions which will enable the convention to settle
the issue.
