Although I have not yet had the opportunity to attend a National convention
(this will be rectified in Minneapolis in 1998) I do think that Gentelmen's
Agreement not withstanding it is in the fraternitiy's best interest to allow
all-male chapters.
Alpha Phi Omega is different things at different schools. Each chapter has
evolved into what it is today. A Nu Mu at Minnesota-Duluth, an all-male
chapter, recruits a totally different crowd than, let's say a Alpha Tau at
Butler, a co-ed but imo female-dominated chapter. There are schools where
the combination of an all-male Alpha Phi Omega chapter, coupled with a
female service fraternity, would attract more members and would do more
service than one co-ed chapter. If this combination would recruit more total
members, it is better furthering the aims of Alpha Phi Omega on that campus.
Bettering the aims of APhiO on each campus betters the aims of APhiO as a whole.
BTW, there are several female members of my chapter who also defend the
place if not the virtue of the all-male chapter in Alpha Phi Omega.
