A chapter's on-campus image is very important when it comes to member
recruitment and retention. I pledged in the Spring of 1995 with around 60
others. Many of them were drawn because of the social side of APhiO, and did a
whole lot to promote that aspect of it. [Don't read into that anything
relating to the alcohol discussion; this is a separate point.] Many people
became so involved in the social side that they neglected their academics
and are no longer here. There are only 5 of my pledge brothers left.
Pledges classes that have followed that have attracted people because of service
in general do a much better job than people attracted because of the social
side, with the service being secondary. The opposite has also been true.
This isn't to say that the social side is not important, and in fact many of our
members enjoy the social side of being a member of a large organization.
If your chapter has the reputation on campus of having APO stand for "Another
Party Organization" than it may be time to take a hard look at who you are
recruiting, why, and what can be done to bring the focus back to service.
Perspective is the key. Our chapter is better because of its better
perspective.
This is a side note to the alcohol discussion, not meant to self-incriminate or
imply things about my chapter that aren't true, but I hope it brings a good
perspective on things.
