I was wondering, how many chapters out here have some type of transfer
policy? If you do, what is it and what is your rationale behind the
requirements?
I have seen that transfering is a pain in neck in many different cases.
Obviously, being torn from one's friends must not be a pleasant experience.
I think that this is multiplied when the transfer thinks of their memories
of APO and assumes that they will be welcomed with open arms into a new
chapter. Every single one of the brothers who have transferred that I have
heard of have had a bad experience. Two of the transfers that I know of went
into the same small chapter in the same year. One is no longer associated
with APO anymore will the other has had to break through some of the problems
of the chapter in order to remain active. This was as a result of fighting
through tears.
Both of the two that have transferred to my school since I have been
here have not been welcomed as they thought they would. One brother who left
my school is not feeling as though her chapter is happy that she came to
them. Overall, they are lacking what they need: Friendship. I don't mean
the generic APO definition but genuine friendship. I do not think this
should happen in APO. I try to do my part but I can't give a feeling of
overall acceptance to those who need it the most.
I think it is a sad state of affairs because only those that are
dedicated will seek out the chapter at a new school. From what I have seen,
these brothers are either ignored or forced to do outrageous things. I do
not think they should have to repledge nor should they be told to wait
forever while the chapter figures out what to do with them. I am looking at
a Transfer Education Program that consists of intervues/signatures and a
brief chapter history. I think that a transfer will have a wider view of the
fraternity because they will have seen two different versions of being at the
chapter level. They need a way for them to be encorporated into the chapter
with the least amount of pain possible.
I have one last question. Is there anyone out there who has had a pleasant
transfer experience?
Acceptance is something that we all need to work on in all areas. If there
is someone that has recently transferred into your chapter, do yourself a
favor. Go out of YOUR way to get to know that person.
