Well I can't speak for anyone, I can just give my own opinions
on this issue.=20
An exclusion of single gender chapters is a simple answer to a complex
question. A co-ed APO chapter is likely to get you lynched in downtown
Tehran. While no one is likely to think anything about it in downtown
Vancouver. (other than to make a comment about how it's a cute
Americanism) Making broad sweeping generalizations on a planet full of
people is a potentially dangerous precedent. First is to gather
information, second is to form a hypothesis, third is a test that=20
hypothesis, fifth is a draw a conclusion.
Our first goal is to spread APO beyond the Phillipines and United
States.=20
We've made our first tenative start in Qu=E9bec, and you know
for a place which is ONLY 330 miles from my front door I'm discovering
a world of things that I've never really thought of. Right now all the
people going across the border are learning, a lot about a country most
Americans erronously assume is just like our own. The last year and a
half have been an abject lesson in "thinking Canadian".
Growing APO into a truely international thing is not the job of five
years (or else it would have been done by now). It's the job of the next
twenty at least.=20
And you know what? Just as APO had to adapt to the Phillipines, so too
will it have to adapt to EACH nation is gets to, as the world is not
full of Americans. The goal of leadership, friendship, and service
stands before us as a guide. I believe quite in fully in the goal that
APO should be representative of the campus on which it is chartered. To
get APO started in each nation will be a lot of work and a lot of
learning on our part. I also refuse to believe that *any* nation is not
ready for Service, but unique structures may have to grow in each nation
to suit the local needs.
This all to me does not mean just co-ed, it means French Speakers, it
means people of African desecent. The goal is a chapter that is
representative of the campus on which it is chartered. I'm also savy
enough to know that when I walk into a situation that I need to have an
open mind. I also need to come to the conclusion before I get there that
I as staff am going to learn as much from the effort to charter a
chapter as the student are.
And since this is one of the high points of APO-L subscribership...=20
