Brothers,
If I may just interject one comment here. It seems that there is
a bit of a misunderstanding of what proxy voting is. Proxy voting would
be giving your voting rights to another voting member (presumably from
another chapter). The type of voting that seems to be being discussed is
voting in absentia. They are quite different things, as proxy voting
allows for the person actually casting the vote to sit in on the debate
while voting in absentia does not.
And, since I am putting in my two cents anyway, I may as well add
my own opinion on the substance of the debate. As an active brother, I
see nothing wrong with the current system of allowing National Board
Members (and a few others) voting priviledges. Yes, the main focus of
this organization is on the actives, but we have the National Board,
Regional Directors and others for a reason. That is, they have been
around a lot longer than the actives, and have different (and often
better) perspectives on the issues that we face.
The same holds true for alumni. I am not sure what the current
set-up is for alumni votes at Nationals (give me a break, it's been a
while since I read through all of that stuff), bit I would not be opposed
to allowing the two alumni votes per region, for the same reasons I listed
above.
