Brothers,
At Zeta Epsilon, we made the opposite move. We moved from service
hours to service projects. Basically, the rational was, we are a pretty
small chapter, and we didn't do enough long service projects to
realistically require so many hours. Instead, we require that you attend
two service projects per semester, two fellowship activities per semester,
and help with one fund raiser per semester. In addition, you must be on
two committees each year. We also require attendance at weekly meetings
(if you can't be there, it has to be cleared through the Attenance
Keeper). Any special circumstances are okayed by E-board.
This has worked relatively well, but, I have to admit, we aren't
very good at tracking or enforcing this. I guess it just amounts to the
fact that, if the requirement is there, people will make an effort to
fulfill it. If there is no statement as to what the requirement is,
people often times will not make the effort.
Just my 2 cents
