Geez, Nick, get your stories straight :P Yes, St. Peter was hit
by an F-3 tornado with recorded wind gusts over 200 miles per hour at
approximately 5:15pm on Sunday evening. However, the campus of Gustavus
Adolphus College largely remains intact. Only two buildings are "no
longer": the tennis bubble and the Interpretive Center for the Arboreteum.
The tornado entered campus in the Arb which is a tragedy because it was
one of the better Arbs in the state with over 330 varieties of trees...
the campus used to be covered in trees.... now it's barren. :( :( :( :(
Most campus buildings suffered damage of some sort. Lund (the
sports center) no longer has a roof on the gymnasium or the hockey
arena... Olin no longer has an observatory on the roof. One of
the campus apartment complexes is missing its roof along with several
campus houses. The Admin building is leaking water badly through the
roof. More than 70 percent of the windows on campus were blown out so
most students will return to tremendous water damage.
College officials are anticipating annoucing when college will
officially resume for students on Wednesday. The blessing is spring break
started on Friday so campus was officially closed and nearly all of the
2350 students were not around :)
The status of chapter items is not known. Our main advisor kept
the charters in her office which is in a basement so hopefully they
survived. Other items were scattered across campus with their respective
officers... Hopefully everything will have survived intact :)
The college was one of the first hits as it sits on the west side
towards the southern edge of town. Only the far northwest part of town
was spared. Over 25% of the houses were completely destroyed... 90 % of
town suffered damage. Phone service to the area is very limited. They are
working on restoring the power to the areas but are being hampered by
rains and they are forecasting snow tonight.
Basically no access is being allowed at this time. The Red
Cross closed one housing shelter this afternoon as people are
establishing residences with friends and family out of the damaged
areas. The Salvation Army still has numerous feeding sites set up
across the town. 150 National Guardmen are patrolling the area. They
are anticipating it being towards the end of the week when they will open
up the highway which is the four main highway from Minneapolis to Mankato.
Please keep the people of St. Peter in your hearts and minds in
the next few days.
