EDITORS NOTE - Welcome to our "Back to School" Issue. Sorry, no cheap
bargains, but hopefully lots of good details about VISTA and National
Service.

In this issue you will find dates and times of awareness events scheduled
so far. Unfortunately, due to staff limitations we cannot go everywhere.
Although if you know of an event where we can talk to lots of folks who
care about strengthening communities, you will find a list of Placement
Officers with a contact for your area.

Also in this issue are some interesting and creative internship
opportunities with VISTA Placement. For students beginning a new year,
this may be a way to earn credit, participate in the service movement, and
meet some committed people... perhaps even work with expanding the VISTA
presence on Internet!

Most of all, though, we encourage folks to start off their new year by
finding a volunteer opportunity with a school group or in the local
community. That's what we're all about.

Welcome Back to school. Welcome back to two issues each month of VISTA
On-Line. (Note: There was only one VOL for July and one for August.)

I. AmeriCorps LAUNCH

You heard it here first, but you will hear it everywhere soon. The launch
of AmeriCorps is shaping up to be an exciting and historical event. On
Monday, September 12th, over 14,000 AmeriCorps Members will gather in more
than 45 launch sites around the country for swearing-in ceremonies.
Participants will begin their service and mark the realization of Clinton's
expanded National service initiative. VISTA Volunteers (AmeriCorps*VISTA)
and National Civilian Community Corps (AmeriCorps*NCCC) members will also
celebrate their service at these events.

There will be events from New York Central Park to Los Angelos
MCA/Universal Amphitheatre with Cabinet Members, Governors, Mayors, popular
figures, and folks committed to service.

At the White House, President and Mrs. Clinton, and Vice-President and Mrs.
Gore will welcome more than 2,500 AmeriCorps Members, Corporation
employees, friends of national service and special guests to the South Lawn
for the swearing-in event at 12:30. A live satellite of the President's
remarks and the swearing-in will be fed to launch sites around the country.

III. How to get a VISTA Representative to your area

There are only nine VISTA Recruiter/Placement Officers in the country, so
it's impossible to visit as many places as we would like. We are
especially interested in venues that provide an opportunity to talk to
people with a demonstrated commitment to Service and/or folks with special
skills (Law, Medicine, Business, Construction, to name a few...). If your
University or institution is having an event (for example, a panel
discussion on service or a volunteer fair) or if you are particularly
interested in having a visit, please contact the Placement Officer for your
area.

If scheduling does not permit a visit from a VISTA Placement Officer, we
can sometimes coordinate visits or presentations by current or former VISTA
Volunteers. In general, we encourage Professors and Career Office
personnel to develop relationships with VISTA projects in your area.
Perhaps there is a VISTA in your town who would talk to a class about VISTA
or setup an information table in a central location...?
