I've stayed out of this debate about making all chapters co-ed for as long as
I can, and if I don't say something now, I am going to get steaming mad.
First off, Shawn is right, there are two All-Male chapters in his section
(Shawn's is not among them). Those two are Clemson University and The Citadel.
(Before ANYONE starts asking me any questions about the Shannon Faulkner deal,
I cannot answer them, because frankly, I haven't kept up real well with the
situation.... 30 semester hours and being in band will do that to you). When
a promise is given, we should keep our promise right? Or are we saying that
it is okay to promise things and go back on some of them? I don't think so.
That's not honorable. If you aren't honorable, I don't want anything to do
with you. Period. I can't trust you, and it takes an awful long time to build
trust back up. So for those that say "abolish all-male chapters," you are
saying let's go back on our word (or those that gave the promise of the
fraternity in the past). And if co-ed chapters are mandated for those that are
currently single-gender, then I will pack my bags and leave APhiO. I won't
leave because it can no longer be All-Male here at The Citadel, but i will
leave because APhiO as a whole made a promise and later on it was broken. To
me, the fraternity would have dishonored itself in my eyes. And that applies
for a lot of other people.
As for the toast song, leave it alone. Thomas Jefferson wrote that all men are
created equal. The Preamble of the Constitution says We the People. Lemme
tell you something, when both of those lines were penned, blacks
(afro-americans, etc. whatever term you want to use) were not considered men
or people. Now they are. We apply our principles in the Declaration of
Independence not to mean all males, but every member of the human race. It is
known as being flexible and changing the definition over time. Words ARE
mutable. Why can't you do the same? If you are going to be up in arms over
female rights, then if you aren't up in arms about Asian-American rights,
Afro-American rights, Hispanic-American rights, rights of religious orgs, etc.
then I see you as being biased and one-sided. The human race is both male and
female. Let's act like it for a change.
