Well, I see someone already posted the hypothetical situation I was going to
bring up about a transfer female to a school with an all male chapter. The
reason I thought of this is because I personally am a transfer student,
although this school does have a co-ed chapter. (I was initiated into Theta
Upsilon-- no, I haven't forgotten all you folks out in Cleveland!) For all
that I am not against all male chapters wanting to stay that way, I do think
that a situation like this needs to be considered. I know that when I
transferred here, involvement with APO is a large part of what made me feel
at home at this new school. I don't think it would really be fair to deny
participation to someone who has already been initiated.
As for calling female members "brothers," I honestly think that calling
them something else, giving them a different label, would creat more
separation in the fraternity than unity. It's somewhat like dividing the
fraternity into subclasses-- the "brothers" and "sisters". Language implies
a lot, even if it's not a conscious thought. Maybe it wouldn't make that
much of a difference, but I really don't think it'd be necessary.
Aside from all that, I was indirectly reminded that I was remiss about
introducing myself here. As I stated above, I am a transfer student, and I
was originally initiated into Theta Upsilon (at Case Western Reserve
University) last fall. I have since transferred to Iowa State University,
where I am currently a Xi chapter wannabe. I say wannabe because my
transfer application couldn't be processed until Xi became a chapter, which
only occurred last week. I think it was mailed in recently. (Our
treasurer needed to buy stamps.) Even though I'm only a wannabe, I'm
currently the Fellowship Director here. Aside from that, I'm a junior
majoring in Biological/Pre-medical Illustration (which boils down to drawing
blood and guts). I also fancy myself to be a bit of a singer, dancer, and
occasional choreographer. I tthink that pretty much sums it up (today).
