Greetings everyone,
I have asked my questions regarding all-male chapters, and I have
received numerous answers (publicly & privately). I want to
thank everyone who responded for keeping to good E-Mail etiquette
and not flaming. I also want to thank you for the valuable
information that you have given me.
Some of the answers I received were okay, and marginally...I'll
say...debatable, but they still explained a few things that I
didn't already know.
However, most of the answers I received were well thought out,
and very informative.
For the ones that went public, I hope all of us benefitted from
the information, and I hope all of us have learned why these
chapters remain all-male.
In conclusion of the "all-male chapter" issue, I respect &
understand the all-male chapters a lot more now. I know some of
their reasons, and I can see where they are coming from.
Personally, I still believe being in a co-ed chapter was good for
me, and I still wish to clear up some gender issues in our
National organization.
The "all-male chapter" issue was interesting, but what REALLY
sparked the debate over all-male chapters was the Toast Song
issue. The National Board of Directors are recommending that we
change all "men" words to "True to", and others are recommending
that we add a third verse. If we change the Toast Song, we may
alienate all-male chapters. If we leave it the way it is, we may
alienate some chapters with female members. So, here is a little
logical argument to help you make your respective decisions about
changing the Toast Song:
I believe we should look for some compromises on our Toast Song
issue, and I believe the "third verse" proposal is that
compromise. The "True to" proposal will alter our history by
re-wording our original Toast Song. The "Third verse" will ADD
to our history, and keep the first 2 verses intact, for future
generations to sing. It will also enhance our 1976 transition
from all-male to co-ed by reflecting that transition in the 3rd
verse. We made a decision in 1976 in our Bylaws to go co-ed.
Now it is time for our song and other texts to catch up with that
decision. As the saying goes, "in for a Penny, in for a Pound."
So, what do you want?
1) If we stick with the same old Toast Song, we will continue to
alienate female members.
2) If we pass the "True to" proposal, we will alter our history.
3) If we add a "Third verse", we will ADD to our history, and
keep the original intact.
What do you think? Personally, I think it's obvious.
This has been my $0.02 worth.
L8r,
Jeremy Gagliardi
