FYI Brian, my school does not have -any- all male fraternities. Just APO.
I think we are the only fraternity on campus. There are three sororities:
two social, one community service.
My campus is 45% male, 55% female with 3,000 students. So when you said in
your e-mail to look at other fraternities, I can't! We don't have any! :D
Well, the reason why it does bother me is that my point of view is such
that I am PROUD to be who I am, and what God has created me to be.
I am female, and do not feel it necessary to follow in the
footsteps of masculinity.
I can be every bit a leader, a friend, and be committed to service as anyone.
My femininity does not handicap me from following the Scout Law. Just
because I was not born male, I do not feel that my gender needs to be
"fixed" by calling me brother to lessen anyone's confusion about whether
or not I belong to the fraternity. I know who I am, I feel good about who
I am, and I am female.
The same goes for males, and I would not think it would be right to call
males associated with sororities "sisters". I have a feeling you guys
wouldn't like that either.
Flip the coin, and say it to yourself: "Male 'sisters'."
Sounds strange to me, anyway.
Which is why I am confused as to why other female "brothers" have been so
adamant as to wanting to be known as brother. I'm just as proud to be an
active in Alpha Phi Omega as they are.
Perhaps there is a subconscious negative connotation to the title of "sister".
Just because I am a "sister", that does not make me any less of a person, any
less of a member, any less loyal, or any less fraternal. I am still who I am.
I just happen to be female.
Food for thought.
Just my .02 FWIW.
