I have been reading the list for a while now, but have not announced
myself. Seeing a couple of references to advisors, I decided to take
the chance and both offer an introduction and pose a question to the
list.

I am the scouting advisor for Gamma Kappa chapter (Texas Christian
University in Fort Worth, Texas), and have been in this role for about
three years. I had the opportunity to do so because my son is an
active member of the chapter. My background in APO begins there; my
experience in scouting goes back a bit.

I have been the scoutmaster of Troop 64 for eight years, and an
assistant sm for three years before that. Our troop currently has 50
members (boys between the ages of 11 and 17). In addition, I serve as
the district roundtable commissioner (leader of a forum for sm's to
discuss scouting issues) and frequently serve on courses to train new
adult leaders. I am sold on scouting as a program to shape the lives of
boys as they grow to adulthood.

But now the question: just what Does an advisor for APO do? Actually, I
am not completely without a clue on this subject, but I would welcome
the views of members of various chapters from different parts of the
country. I am fairly well convinced of one thing. Not much advice is
actually required (if GK is any indication). I have found the instincts
and wisdom of the collective membership up to the challenges they have
faced, and, as a purveyor and recipient of free advise, I have always
found that advice to be worth every penny paid.

So I offer the use of my garage to make the homecoming float, I lend my
garden tools for service projects, and I attend meetings when I can
and enjoy the fellowship. What else...?
