This seems to be re-hashed every so often, and so I wasn't surprised to see it
come up again on APO-L. Being an E-Board officer, specifically President,
forces you to become something of a "heavy" with regard to the National side of
the fraternity. I was recently told that it wasn't my place to become the
"National Cop" for my chapter, but that is what it feels like. I have a chapter
that enjoys the company of fellow Brothers, and alcohol is not an uncommon
ingrediant in a social event (here "social event" should be taken in the
context of unoffical and spontanuous). On the other hand I have Brothers that
feel somewhat jaded as they see Nationals as the colonial settlers did way back
in pre-American history when the English government started to pass legislation
without representation.
Now I understand the role of the National Board, and its power to make
decisions in the interium between Conventions, but it is not just my opinion
alone that bpth Gerry and the Board were a little abrupt in this decision and
gave little to no warning as well as little to no explanation as to what the
policy meant to the chapters. It would have helped if we had recieved an
explanation to it for the chapters to use as a platform from which to base their
individual policies.
For now, I have said my peace.
