Earlier this evening I was informed that one of the pledges from our
chapter posted to the list. At the Beta Rho chapter we encourage pledges
to learn as much about the fraternity as they can, both inside the pledge
education program and on their own. As such, we encourage our pledges to
observe the paperwork between chapter and the national office. We also
encourage them to learn about the issues facing the fraternity nationally
by talking with brothers who frequently correspond with other chapters
and by watching the traffic on the list.
In his post this evening, Michael Whitfield addressed the issues of the
alcohol policy and the toast song. In his post, however, Mr. Whitfield
failed to give his disclaimer that the opinions expressed were his own
opinions and not those of the chapter.
The "official chapter position" on the alcohol policy is that the national
policy is much more lenient than our own chapter policy. In essence we
are a dry chapter, and therefore have no objections to the national policy.
As for the toast song, our membership has varying opinions and the chapter
has not yet voted on the "official position" we will take at the convention
this year.
As for Whitfield's misconception about the National Office making
fraternity policy, the pledgemaster has assured me that he will review
the National operations of the Fraternity at this week's pledge meeting.
We apologize for any misconceptions that this may have caused. In the
future I hope that we will not have to print any more disclaimers of this
sort. If you have any questions or comments please contact me by private
