Brothers:
I just read the listing of ammendments up for discussion at
nationals, and quite frankly, I am a bit distressed.
I noticed that there is an ammendment to remove most of the
mentioning of the Boy Scouts from the Purpose and other such important
articles. I understand that there needs to be some type of official
separation from the Boy Scouts, but there is no way we can rightly remove
all mention of the Boy Scouts, as I understand it is intended.
The Fraternity was, and is, based on the fellowship of the
principles of the Boy Scouts of America, and should be so stated in our
purpose, which, as I understand it, is why we exist. We were founded,
and have always had strong ties with the Boy Scouts, and trying to remove
mention of them in our purpose serves no real purpose other than to quell
the BSA executive director's unease. So what if people think that A Phi
O and the BSA are related?! WE ARE RELATED!!!! Were we not founded by
Boy Scouts? Are not many of our ideals, beliefs, and even ceremonies
like many in Scouting? And, for that matter, was our membership not
limited to Scouts untill the mid-sixties?
I realise that this is going to offend quite a lot of people, and
for once, I am not sorry. At all. I am an Eagle Scout, a Brotherhood
member of the Order of the Arrow (WWW!!!), AND a Brother of Alpha Phi
Omega, and I am damn proud of all three!!! And above all else, I am
proud that these three ARE related, and I am proud to serve to the best
of my ability in all three.
That's all for now. I welcome ANY AND ALL dissenting opinions!
Dave
