I agree wholeheartedly with Jim Porter from Section 33. Our chapter has
elections each semester so that as many people as possible can participate
in the leadership aspect of the fraternity. I think a lot of people here
at Indiana University Mu Chapter would agree with me when I say that
sometimes we elect people that may not be immediately appropriate, but I'll
tell you that by the end of the semester everyone's learned a lot. Once in
awhile someone tries to change the term length to one year in the bylaws,
but it usually fails. I know I couldn't possibly have had the energy to be
president for a year straight (I took a semester off APO between my terms)
and the chapter would have suffered for it if I had to stay in a whole year
running. I think part of our responsibility as brothers is to encourage
each other to learn about leadership through experience, and I think that
term limits is one way of accomplishing that on all levels of fraternity
administration.
The bad side is that there may not be enough people to fill the positions,
and perhaps some provisions should be made for that circumstance.
