Dear Active Members:
ARE YOU READY FOR NATIONAL SERVICE DAY?
IT'S LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY!
This year National Service Day is Saturday, November 5th and the theme
is
Chemical Dependency & Eating Disorder Awareness. It is not too late to start
planning
your National Service Day project. Your chapter can easily become involved
in
educating your campus and community about these problems. For ideas about
meeting this need on your campus and in your community, contact your school
health
center, chapter advisors, local Public Health Department, community hospital,
treatment center or support group. For additional ideas and resources for
your
Chemical Dependency or Eating Disorder Awareness project, see the National
Service
Day 1994 Handbook that your chapter has just received.
There is one very important aspect of National Service Day that must not
 be
overlooked. That is the concept of spreading the spirit of service. From
its inception in
1979, National Service Day was not just a day when all Alpha Phi Omega
chapters did
a project on the same day. The original goal was that National Service Day
was to be a
massive outpouring of service -- not just by our members, but also by other
civic and
service groups participating in our projects. It is important that your
chapter involve as
many other people and groups as possible in your National Service Day
project. Plan
a project and invite campus, civic, church or scouting groups to join you.
 Think of it as
service for others and with others. Also, encourage and help other groups to
plan
projects of their own.
Once you have completed your project, make sure to fill out the Project
Sharing
form (found in the Handbook) and send it back to the National Office by
December 1.
Including a photo of your chapter members carrying out the project would also
be
greatly appreciated.
Here is a great chance to let others know what Alpha Phi Omega is about,
participate in a worthwhile project, and help spread the spirit of service.
