Greetings from the land of the Evil Mouse. We have been looking into
possible changes into how we conduct the elections of officers for the
next term. The main reason we are doing this is to reduce the amount of
time it takes to do so; as it is currently done, it takes approximately 4
hours, in a chapter with 16 actives, to fill 12 positions.
Our current procedure is as follows:
Nominations for all positions are opened at the brotherhood meeting
before elections. However, they are not closed until the next meeting.
At the next meeting, the nominations for a specific position are closed
before speeches are given. All canidates are led out of the room, and
then one by one each canidate is allowed to give a speech, followed by
questions from the brotherhood. Before the ballots are handed out,
there is discussion during which no canidate is present. Ballots are
then handed out, and counted by the advisors. If there is no majority,
then the 2 canidates with the most votes go through the speeches /
discussion / voting process again.
We have now filled one position.
Before we close nominations for the next position, those who just lost
are allowed to be nominated, then we close nominations, and the speech /
discussion / voting / run-off cycle begins again.

There is obviously much room for improvement, but some brothers are
opposed to changing this system on the argument that it assures that the
best person is placed where they would be most effective.

My questions are:
1) How does your chapter conduct elections?
2) What improvements ( including the outright trashing of...) the above
method would you suggest?
