Though she had already spent a decade in Congress, and though she had gotte=
n her start as a community organizer and councilwoman in Baltimore, and tho=
ugh her run for Senate was one of three national contests that year in whic=
h both major candidates were women, gender and appearance still played into=
coverage of the race. But, as Mikulski made clear, conversation about whet=
her she or any of the other female candidates looked like voters ideas of w=
hat a politician should be was just a way to keep that image from changing.=
 As TIME wrote then:

In Maryland, Mikulski and Republican nominee Linda Chavez are waging tough,=
noholdsbarred campaigns. Although both women come from ethnic, workingclas=
s backgrounds, we are as different as two people can be, says Chavez, 39, a=
cool Hispanic American who is married and makes much of being the mother o=
f three sons. Mikulski, 50, is single, a selfstyled scrapper with the sturd=
y perseverance of a tugboat. She sharply turns aside comments that she does=
not look senatorial. Says the candidate: A lot of Americans, black or whit=
e or female, are always told that they dont look the part. Its one of the o=
ldest code words.

Mikulkski won and became the first female Democrat to hold a seat in the Se=
nate not previously held by her husband. As TIME put it back then, she had =
abandoned petticoat politics an appropriate tactic for the woman who brough=
t the pantsuit to the Senate. Its one of those enduring Zen koans of scienc=
e that weve all grown up with: Light behaves as both a particle and a wavea=
t the same time. Einstein taught us that, so were all generally on board, b=
ut to actually understand what it means would require several Ph.D.s and a =
thorough understanding of quantum physics. Whats more, scientists have neve=
r been able to devise an experiment that documents light behaving as both a=
wave and a particle simultaneously. Until now.

Why Should We Care About Quantum Computing? Thats the contention of a team =
of Swiss and American researchers, who say theyve succeeded in capturing th=
e firstever snapshot of lights dual behavior. Using an advanced electron mi=
croscope one of only two on the planet at the EPFL labs in Switzerland, the=
team has generated a kind of quantum photograph of light behaving as both =
a particle and a wave. The experiment involves firing laser light at a micr=
oscopic metallic nanowire, causing light to travel as a wave back and forth=
along the wire. When waves traveling in opposite directions meet, they for=
m a standing wave that emits light itself as particles. By shooting a strea=
m of electrons close to the nanowire, the researchers were able to capture =
an image that simultaneously demonstrates both the wavenature and particlen=
ature of light. Extraordinary Beauty Of The NanoArt World: Photos This expe=
riment demonstrates that, for the first time ever, we can film quantum mech=
anics and its paradoxical nature directly, says lead researcher Fabrizio Ca=
rbone of EPFL, on the labs project page. The study is to be officially publ=
ished this week in the journal Nature Communications.

Mesmerizing and swirling animations of rain and snow dance across a map of =
the Earth, shown in a video released by NASAs Global Precipitation Measurem=
ent (GPM) mission. The NASA video captures worldwide precipitation from Apr=
il to September 2014, and even shows Hurricane Arthur twist into a tropical=
storm from July 2 to 4 in the Atlantic Ocean, said Gail SkofronickJackson,=
a GPM project scientist at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt,=
 Md.

The GPM mission is the first coordinated international satellite network th=
at provides near realtime global estimates of rain and snow, SkofronickJack=
son said at news conference yesterday. Weirdo Weather: 7 Rare Weather Event=
s Like an orchestra conductor, the observatory unifies precipitation measur=
ements from a network of 12 international satellites, combining them into a=
harmonious product called IMERG, or Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals f=
or GPM. IMERG can assemble the data into one nearuniversal map, NASA resear=
chers said. IMERG provides global precipitation rates every 30 minutes, and=
 has a 5 by 5mile (8 by 8kilometer) resolution, creating an unprecedented v=
iew of rain and snow affecting cities and suburbs, SkofronickJackson said. =
The new video shows a detailed view of precipitation levels around the worl=
d, from 60 degrees north to 60 degrees south latitude, or from the Northwes=
t Territories in Canada to below the southern tip of Argentina, researchers =
said. In this imagery, you can see the deep tropical convective storms popp=
ing up along the equator, SkofronickJackson said. These evaporate heat from=
the oceans surface and transport it high into the atmosphere for redistrib=
ution in the Earths system.
