But Belfiore could have been talking about any hardware platform. Microsoft sounds like it wants to elevate Microsoft mobile applications to the level of importance of a PC—making the actual hardware, and operating system, irrelevant. </span><span style="color: #000; "> But Android Auto is not an operating system. Its just a secondary interface that lays on top of an operating system. The real battle is over the operating system of a vehicles infotainment system. Google took Android, its open source mobile operating system that runs on Linux and is designed for smartphones and tablets, and modified it so it could be used in cars. </span><span style="color: #000; "> The new Your Phone app sounds like one of the first manifestations of that vision. Recall that Microsoft tried, and failed, to make phones into PCs with Continuum, which projected the phones Windows 10 Mobile OS and apps onto a monitor. With recent versions of Windows 10, Microsoft has gone the other way: You can now reply to texts sent your phone from your PC. With Your Phone, a UWP app, users will have a window into a users phone right from their PC, allowing them to text from their phone, share photos, and view notifications, representatives said, letting them work without distraction from their phone. Sharing photos would be a new capability for the Windows platform (though photos snapped with a phone, and automatically uploaded to OneDrive, are already viewable with the Windows 10 Photos app moments later). </span><span style="color: #000; "> This builds off of the automakers partnership with Google that was announced last year to possibly bring the Android operating system into its cars. Its a notable announcement for Google, which has been battling with Apple along with automotive incumbents for control of the vehicle screen. It all started in 2015 when Google released Android Auto, an in car platform that brings the look and feel of a smartphone to a vehicles center screen. Both Android Auto and its Apple CarPlay rival have had success. These platforms are now available in hundreds of new cars. </span> </p>
