When Johnny got to town he started asking around about anyone who had seen a black boy but very few
of the soldiers had Johnny finally got word of one locked up in a barn outside of town Johnny goes
to the barn and Cush is the person locked up in there Johnny is told by the guard to go see the

the house Mr McLean gives Johnny breakfast Johnny finds out then that Generals Lee and Grant are
coming to that house to sign a peace treaty He rushes out to the barn with this news in hopes of ing
Cush He leaves his mules near the house since he figures there will not be much fighting there The
soldiers are about to Cush when Johnny arrives but he tells them that the war is over They initially
do not believe Johnny but he is eventually able to convince them and they Cush Cush and Johnny then

because of this and sets out across the field despite Johnnys protests He does not get very far
before Confederate troops spot him He tries to run back towards Johnny but they catch him With Cush
being black and Johnny in a Union uniform he knows things do not look good Johnny tells them about
his Pa getting ed and says that Cush is his slave and that they just took the uniforms off a couple
of bodies The troops decide to let Johnny go but they take Cush with them Johnny knew there was a
pretty good chance that Cush would get shot if they took him to the camp so he set out to save Cush
Before he got too far down the road he saw that there had been a battle and quite a few troops were
Johnny took the clothes off one of them and then talked to a dying soldier for a bit Johnny heads
west and takes Cush in the wagon due to Cushs hurt leg They still have not found clothes so they
travel by night and hide during the day While they are hiding Cush brings up Lincolns speech again
and Johnny regrets having taught it to him wrong in the first place Because of this he decides hes
going to teach Cush the right words Johnnys excuse is that he was confused before but eventually
Cush catches on that Johnny was lying Cush gets mad at Johnny
