One more side to this issue is that perhaps there is a generation gap to be
considered. For starts, the quest to find racist slanderers in East Campus,
as President Vest implies in his strongly-worded letter, is clearly a
witch-hunt. But I can see how Vest might read that email invite and think
otherwise, because his generation has a very different history of race
relations than ours. In a word, could it be that Vest just "doesn't get the
younger generation" when it comes to how we handle race and diversity?
If there are student groups on campus who are upset about this email as
well (?), then that shoots that theory. Nevertheless, I do think that an
understanding of our generation's greater comfort with racial issues needs
to be remembered.
