I'd say its heart-felt, but not well thought out. The email plagarizes
decades of feel good one liners from damn near every left-leaning talk or
article on race in the past fifteen years.
And it was long.

If racism is so subtle, should the response be equally so?

Why? Lots of people of all colors like race jokes, lots of people on all
rungs of the income and wealth ladder love class jokes. Seems to me that the
mere mention of race unceremoniously doesn't imply a racist context or impugn
the character of those who speak less judiciously than others.
