It's almost summer. Hey, it almost even feels like summer. Mmmmm,
time to break out those wicked cool sunglasses and hit the beach. Or
something fun. And that's what this is about: Doing Something Fun.

For those of you new folks, summer-fun is "For announcing and planning
fun things to do" during the summer. For our purposes "fun things"
includes just about anything that involves not being logged in. It's
also for hanging out with old friends, meeting new cool people, and
getting some fresh air.

An example: say it's a gorgeous June day, sun is shining, flowers are
blooming, bees are buzzing, birdies are chirping, and you're sitting
in a windowless Athena cluster angsting on LiveJournal about how
you're so bored. (Back in the day, people would at least be having
something resembling fun by playing umoria.... But I digress.)
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration whops you upside the head causing you
send mail to summer-fun saying, "Hey, everybody, let's all go have a
picnic on the Boston Common at 1pm. Bring your own lunch and playing
cards, etc. It'll be much more fun then reading angst-ridden posts in
LiveJournal!" Try it, you'll like it. And if fifty people show up
each with a little extra food, maybe you'll end up with a free lunch
for being a fun-organizing deity.

There are several traditional things to do: Fulton's Folly (going to
watch the Pops and fireworks on July 4); walking the Freedom Trail;
announcements of ice cream festivals, outdoor concerts, etc.; trips to
the MFA (whatdoyamean you've never been to the MFA!) or Science Museum
or Aquarium or Waldon Pond or etc. You get the idea. Go plan
something, or just be spontaneous. You could even host a tea party!
(Hint: add yourself to the tea-lovers mailing list too.) Oh, and just
in case you thought I was volunteering, somebody other than me will be
organizing Fulton's Folly.

Okay, the standard technobabble details:

You can add yourself via
        blanche summer-fun -a username
or delete yourself via
        blanche summer-fun -d username
and if you don't have an Athena account, send mail to summer-fun-request.

Other details: If the great administrator of joviality finds out that
your email address bounces, he'll bounce you off the list without
asking questions first. And if you are foolhardy enough to send
subscription requests to summer-fun instead of to summer-fun-request,
he will subscribe you to every spammer list he can think of instead.

Oh, and feel free to forward this announcement to other appropriate
places, but keep in mind it's been sent to a whole slew of lists
already. Especially feel free to tell new freshmen about this list.

What are you doing still logged on? Get outside and have fun.
