KABUL, Afghanistan A NATO airstrike killed 11 Afghan civilians, including
10 children, during a fierce weekend gunbattle with Taliban militants that
also left one U.S. civilian adviser dead in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan
officials said Sunday. The U.S.-led coalition confirmed that airstrikes were
called in by international forces during the Afghan-led operation in a remote
area of Kunar province near the Pakistan border. The coalition said it
was aware of reports that civilians were killed, but had no immediate
information about their deaths. The death of Afghan civilians caught in the
crossfire of battle has been a major point of contention between international
forces and the Afghan government, prompting President Hamid Karzai to ban
his troops from requesting airstrikes earlier this year.Wasifullah Wasify,
a government official in Kunar province, said the airstrike on Saturday
targeted a house and killed 10 children and one woman inside. He
said seven Taliban suspects also were killed and five other women were
wounded inside the house. The airstrike occurred after a joint U.S.-Afghan
force faced hours of heavy gunfire from militants after launching an operation
targeting a senior Taliban leader late Friday in the Shultan area of
Kunar's Shigal district, according to tribal elder Gul Pasha, who also is
the chief of the local council in Shultan."In the morning after sunrise,
planes appeared in the sky and airstrikes started and continued u
FILE: Undated: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, (r.), with the Korean
People's Army senior officers, preparing a satellite launch.APGen. James
Thurman, the head of U.S. Forces Korea, has delayed his planned visit
to Capitol Hill this week due to heightened tensions on the Korean
peninsula.Thurman was scheduled to begin testifying Tuesday before multiple
Senate and House committees about the situation in which the totalitarian
North Korean government has declare a state of war on neighboring South
Korea. Kim Jong Un -- North Koreas new, young leader -- has
also said he would restart nuclear reactors. The United State earlier this
month sent B-52 aircraft to South Korea as part of a training
exercise and has moved a Navy ship off the peninsula's coast, signals
from the White House that the U.S. wants to head off any
potential conflict by flexing its military might."Given the current situation,
Gen. Thurman will remain in Seoul next week as a prudent measure,"
Col. Amy Hannah, a spokeswoman for the general, told Fox News on
Sunday.Hannah said the general has asked the House and Senate Armed Services
committees and others to excuse his absence until he can testify at
a later date.He looks forward to appearing before the committees at the
earliest possible date," she also said.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">FILE: Undated: The Keystone Oil Pipeline under construction in North Dakota
in this undated photograph released on the Obama administration on January
18, 2012.REUTERSThe Keystone XL Pipeline has emerged as a major issue in
the Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election, with environmental groups
committing nearly one-third of the $1.25 million in outside money already
spent on campaigns. The biggest spender so far is the League of Conservation
Voters, which has already spent more than $545,000 to help elect Democratic
candidate and Rep. Ed Markey, who has a strong pro-environment platform. Our
field campaign is resonating with voters across Massachusetts, said Navin
Nayak, a political specialist for the group. The people of Massachusetts
want climate change champion Ed Markey representing them. The group also
plans to spend about $100,000 more to knock on the doors of
more than 240,000 likely Democratic primary voters before the April 30 primaries.Supporters
of the Canada-to-Texas pipeline are urging the Obama administration to approve
the project to create thousands of jobs and make the United States
less dependent on foreign oil. However, critics say drilling for oil in
Canadas dirty tar sand will release greenhouse gas emissions.Markey faces
fellow Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch in the party primary and holds a
double-digit lead, according to most polls. The winner will face the top
vote-getter in the Republican primary that features for
orning on the Las Vegas Strip. Furlong believes the latter three
fled Carson City on Friday after news broke of McCune's disappearance."At
this point, we believe all four took part in his murder and
disappearance," Furlong told The Associated Press. "We anticipate that the
district attorney's office will amend the criminal complaint to also charge
(Garcia and Blackmore) with murder."It wasn't immediately clear whether
any of the four had an attorney, and the Las Vegas and
Carson City jails don't make inmates available to the media for comment.
The three suspects in Las Vegas are expected to be returned to
Carson City within a week, Furlong said.McCune had held his position since
December 2009 and worked similar jobs for two decades before that, said
Nevada Division of Insurance spokesman Jake Sunderland. As head of the division's
corporate and financial affairs section, McCune worked to ensure the solvency
of insurance companies in the state. He was charged with ensuring each
company had sufficient money in their reserves to cover all claims and
obligations.McCune was single and without any known children, Furlong said,
and there was no forced entry at his home. The sheriff said the
suspects were spotted in the area of McCune's apartment. He credited their
arrests to "relentless" detective work and "some great tips from a lot
of people and a lot of businesses."While authorities have not found McCune's
pickup truck, they located its licens
