Disneyland has temporarily shut down the popular ride because of safety
concerns.APANAHEIM, Calif. Three rides at Disneyland, including the famous
Space Mountain roller coaster, were temporarily closed over the weekend
as the company reviewed its employee safety protocols after citations from
state regulators. The citations were received Friday from the California
Division of Occupational Safety and Health, according to Disneyland Resorts
spokeswoman Suzi Brown. The closures Saturday of Space Mountain, the Matterhorn
Bobsleds and Soarin' Over California were voluntary and were made out of
an abundance of caution, Brown said Sunday."We constantly strive to maintain
a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors
and we are reviewing certain protocols," she said. The citations were related
to an incident in November when a contracted worker was injured while
performing maintenance on the exterior of the Space Mountain attraction.Disneyland
failed to adequately correct "known fall hazards" that existed on the exterior
of Space Mountain, according to a description of the citation on the
Cal/OSHA website."Furthermore, Disneyland Resort failed to have approved
anchorages or approved tie-backs for contract employees to attach to when
performing scheduled exterior building maintenance," the description reads. The
Matterhorn reopened Sunday. Brown said Sunday it is unclear how long the
other two rides will remain closed.Space Mountain
an Development funds -- including stimulus money -- but failed to file
the requisite paperwork regarding the hiring of low-income workers. In that
case, which also involved the city of Minneapolis, plaintiff Thomas Newell
got neither the backing of the agency nor the Justice Department and
lost the case, which if won would likely have resulted in the
cities repaying tens of millions in damages. The Obama administration has
acknowledged that senior Justice Department attorneys recommended intervening
in the case and characterized the False Claims Act infractions reported
by Newell as "particularly egregious."However, they thought the case would
be "quite weak and never should have been a serious candidate for
intervention," according to the report. The Justice Department claims everything
was above board -- and that the department held three staff briefings,
heard 24 hours of additional testimony and reviewed 1,400 pages of documents
before deciding not to intervene."The litigation decisions made by the department
were in the best interests of the United States and were consistent
with the department's legal, ethical, and professional responsibility obligations,"
the department said in a statement.Former Justice Department spokeswoman
Tracy Schmaler also questioned the use of the term "quid pro quo"
to describe what happened."It's such a loaded term," she said. "I think
in fact you have almost everybody agreeing nothing inappropriate happened

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">Jan. 14, 2013: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, center, speaks during a
news conference announcing an agreement with legislative leaders on New
York's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act in the Red Room at
the Capitol.apALBANY, N.Y. Key measures of New York's tough new gun
law are set to kick in, with owners of guns now reclassified
as assault weapons required to register the firearms and new limits on
the number of bullets allowed in magazines. As the new provisions take effect
Monday, New York's affiliate of the National Rifle Association said it plans
to head to court to seek an immediate halt to the magazine
limit.Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls those and other provisions in the state's
new gun law common sense while dismissing criticisms he says come from
"extreme fringe conservatives" who claim the government has no right to
regulate guns."Yes, they are against it, but they are the extremists and
the extremists shouldn't win, especially on this issue when it is so
important to the majority," Cuomo said in a radio interview Wednesday. "In
politics, we have to be willing to take on the extremists, otherwise
you will see paralysis."New York's new gun restrictions, the first in the
nation passed following December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary
school, limit state gun owners to no more than seven bullets in
magazines, except at competitions or firing ranges. The new regulations in
New York commence as the U.S. Senate prepares to
 o kill them."As originally conceived,
the blue, red and white-ribboned medal was to be awarded to individuals
for "extraordinary achievement" related to a military operation that occurred
after Sept. 11, 2001. But it does not require the recipient to
risk his or her life to get it.Over the last decade of
war, remotely piloted Predator and Reaper drones have become a critical
weapon to gather intelligence and conduct air strikes against terrorists
or insurgents around the world. They have been used extensively on the
battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in strikes in Pakistan,
Yemen and northern Africa.Over the same time, cyber attacks have become
a growing national security threat, with Panetta and others warning that
the next Pearl Harbor could well be a computer-based assault. The Bronze
Star is the fourth-highest combat decoration and rewards meritorious service
in battle, while the Silver Star is the third-highest combat award given
for bravery. The Purple Heart is ranked just below the Bronze Star.Several
other awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, are also
ranked higher than the Silver Star, but are not awarded for combat. In
addition to veterans' concerns, there is a practical side to the rankings
for currently serving troops. There are grades of medals -- commendation,
merit, distinguished -- that affect promotions for those still in uniform.
Each grade gives troops a certain number of points neede
