of State John Kerry will stop in Chicago on Monday to visit
the parents of the young U.S. diplomat who was killed while delivering
textbooks in southern Afghanistan earlier this month.Kerry is making the
detour on his way back from Japan, the final leg of a
10-day overseas tour which started with tragedy when he learned of Anne
Smedinghoff's death while readying to depart for Turkey on April 6.At the
time, a clearly affected Kerry contacted Smedinghoff's parents, Tom and
Mary Beth, from Andrews Air Force Base. On Monday, he will fly
in directly to see them.Smedinghoff was just 25 when she and four
other Americans were killed while walking from a military base to a
nearby school. Two explosions occurred, apparently a suicide car bombing
followed by a roadside blast.An FBI investigation is in its preliminary
stages.Kerry told embassy staff in Tokyo that Smedinghoff was "full of ideals
and full of hopes, taking books to children in a school so
they can learn."She was "wiped out by terrorism -- the worst kind
of nihilism," he said."It doesn't stand for anything except killing people
and s

legislation and weeks after Connecticut joined Colorado in signing into
law tougher new gun restrictions.The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association,
the state's NRA affiliate, has a pending federal lawsuit against the new
provisions. It plans to ask a judge Monday for an immediate halt
to the magazine limit. The new registrations, required over the next year,
will be the group's focus later.The law violates the constitutional rights
of law-abiding citizens "to keep commonly possessed firearms" at home for
self-defense and for other lawful purposes, the New York State Rifle &
Pistol Association said in court papers. It is advising members to obey
the law in the meantime."We are lawful and legal citizens of New
York state and we always obey the law," association President Tom King
said. "It's as simple as that."State Police planned to post forms on
their website for registration starting Monday. Owners of those guns, now
banned from in-state sales, are required within a year to register them.
Alternatively, they can legally sell them to a licensed dealer or out
of state by next Jan. 15.Rich Davenport, recording secretary of the Erie
County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, said their nearly 11,000 members
are united in opposition to the law, which he considers a hasty,
illogical and emotional response to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

an affidavit filed by Dr. Stephen N. Xenakis, a physician who interviewed
the prisoner on the phone, who concluded that the prisoner's "life may
be in imminent danger."Xenakis wrote that after being treated with intravenous
fluids following a collapse last week, the prisoner was placed in solitary
confinement and has not received daily monitoring of his medical condition."Given
the gravity of his condition, these failures constitute deliberate indifference
to his obvious serious medical needs," Xenakis wrote.Killmer claimed that
putting him in solitary confinement was "retaliation" against al-Madhwani
for participating in the hunger strike.But the judge raised jurisdiction
issues from the get-go. Killmer argued that a Supreme Court decision which
established detainees' constitutional right to challenge their confinement
gave the judge jurisdiction in this case. If al-Madhwani dies, Killmer said,
he doesn't get to exercise that right.But Justice Department lawyer Ronald
Wiltsie said that there have been hunger strikes before, and that no
hunger striker ever died at Guantanamo. He said the government will step
in to save al-Madhwani's life. He also said the government doesn't concede
that anything was done to retaliate against al-Madhwani.Lawyers for prisoners
say the hunger strike began around Feb. 6 to protest the virtual
halt in releases under Obama as well as what they say is
a tightening of restrictions and
President Obama said Monday that officials do not know who is behind
the attack on the Boston Marathon, but vowed that those responsible will
"feel the full weight of justice."The president assured that the administration
is mobilizing its "full resources" to help investigate and provide security."The
American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight," Obama said.The president
addressed the nation from the White House briefing room just hours after
the explosion.Officials tell Fox News that Obama has been in touch with
Massachusetts officials regarding the fatal attack and has directed his
administration to provide "whatever assistance is necessary."Reflecting
the very preliminary stage of the investigation, Obama said authorities
do not know who was behind the explosion."We still do not know
who did this or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before
we have all the facts," he said. "But make no mistake, we
will get to the bottom of this. ... We will find out
who did this, and we will hold them accountable."A White House official
said the president called Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Gov.
Deval Patrick earlier Monday to "express his concern for those who were
injured and to make clear that his administration is ready to provide
