en gophers."It's the state's position that this is
really voodoo," he said. The judge did not immediately rule on whether to
allow the images.Arias has said that she killed Alexander in self-defense,
fearing for her life.Prosecutors claim it was premeditated murder that should
result in a death sentence. The defense is hoping to spare Arias'
life, and get an unlikely acquittal or a conviction on a lesser
charge and a prison term. The lawyers went at it again later in
the day as the judge denied another defense mistrial motion. Nurmi said
Martinez engaged in misconduct by posing for photos with fans who have
been gathering at the courthouse on a daily basis to witness a
trial that has a large global following with its many salacious elements.
Nurmi also claimed that Martinez bullied a key defense witness with an
aggressive line of questioning.Martinez ridiculed Arias' team for repeatedly
pressing for mistrials in a case that has already cost taxpayers more
than $2 million for her defense."Perhaps they can add a few more
pennies to the kettle that they have," he said. The focus of the
trial this week is expected to be rebuttal witnesses put on the
stand by the prosecution.
The Supreme Court seemed worried Monday about the idea of companies patenting
genes that can be found inside the human body, as it heard
arguments in a case that could profoundly reshape U.S. medical research
and the fight against diseases like breast and ovarian cancer. The U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office has been awarding patents on human genes for almost
30 years, but opponents of Myriad Genetics Inc.'s patents on two genes
linked to increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer say patent protection
should not be given to something that can be found inside the
human body."Finding a new use for a product of nature, if you
don't change the product of nature, is not patentable. If I find
a new way of taking gold and making earrings out of it,
that doesn't entitle me to a patent on gold. If I find
a new way of using lead, it doesn't entitle me to a
patent on lead," lawyer Christopher Hansen said.Allowing companies like
Myriad to patent human genes or parts of human genes will slow
down or cripple lifesaving medical research like in the battle against breast
cancer, he said. But companies have billions of dollars of investment and
years of research on the line, with Myriad arguing that without the
ability to recoup their investment through the profits that patents bring,
breakthrough scientific discoveries needed to combat all kind of medical
maladies wouldn't happen. That concerned several justices. "Why shouldn't
we worry that Myriad or

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> Jan. 14, 2013: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, center, speaks during a
news conference announcing an agreement with legislative leaders on New
York's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act in the Red Room at
the Capitol.apALBANY, N.Y. Key measures of New York's tough new gun
law are set to kick in, with owners of guns now reclassified
as assault weapons required to register the firearms and new limits on
the number of bullets allowed in magazines. As the new provisions take effect
Monday, New York's affiliate of the National Rifle Association said it plans
to head to court to seek an immediate halt to the magazine
limit.Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls those and other provisions in the state's
new gun law common sense while dismissing criticisms he says come from
"extreme fringe conservatives" who claim the government has no right to
regulate guns."Yes, they are against it, but they are the extremists and
the extremists shouldn't win, especially on this issue when it is so
important to the majority," Cuomo said in a radio interview Wednesday. "In
politics, we have to be willing to take on the extremists, otherwise
you will see paralysis."New York's new gun restrictions, the first in the
nation passed following December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary
school, limit state gun owners to no more than seven bullets in
magazines, except at competitions or firing ranges. The new regulations in
New York commence as the U.S. Senate prepares to
w York gun owner had his
weapons mistakenly seized. They were later ordered to be returned.Sens.
Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who drafted the background
check amendment, insist a registry is expressly prohibited. The language
of the proposal says the Justice Department "may not consolidate or centralize
the records" on firearms sales or possession. It goes on to say
nothing in the proposal would allow the establishment of a "federal firearms
registry."Manchin, speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," reiterated that sellers
can do a background check and keep a record -- but the
proposal would prohibit a national registry, punishing anybody who tries
creating one with up to 15 years imprisonment.Despite the assurances, some
lawmakers were skeptical."It has been said on the floor recently that background
check legislation cannot lead to gun registries because federal law prohibits
that. But current federal law can be changed," Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa,
said last week, calling recordkeeping a "step toward registration."He cited
testimony that gun registration is important to ensuring a system of universal
background checks works. Those concerns were echoed Monday by Blunt, who
said he plans to oppose the bill. He cited reports last week
that said 185,000 people in his state were affected after a list
of concealed-weapon permit holders was given to federal officials.Sen. Tom
Coburn, R-Okla., also said in a statement last week
