Our next MIT-wide Symposium on BIG Questions After Big Hurricanes
will be held on Monday, October 31, 2005, 12:00 noon, Bartos Theatre,
Wiesner Building (E15).
The featured speaker will be Kerry Emanuel, Professor of Meteorology
in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.
This session will focus on the question: What Does Current
Scientific Research Have to Say About the Present and Future Risks
Associated with Hurricanes?
"My results suggest that future warming may lead to an upward trend
in [hurricanes'] destructive potential, and--taking into account an
increasing coastal population--a substantial increase in
hurricane-related losses in the 21st century," reports Kerry Emanuel
in a paper appearing in the July 31 online edition of the journal
Nature.
We hope that you and your colleagues can attend. For those who wish
to attend from a distance, it will be broadcast live at
http://web.mit.edu/katrina/symposia/. It can also be viewed
afterwards at the same site.
