NEW YORK An Internet poker company founder accused of operating his
business like a Ponzi scheme has pleaded guilty to conspiracy.Raymond Bitar
(BIH'-tahr), of Glendora, Calif., appeared Monday in a federal court in
Manhattan. He's the founder of Full Tilt Poker.He was sentenced to time
served and had to give up his assets as part of his
plea deal.Bitar flew from Ireland over the summer to face charges in
a prosecution that shut down U.S. operations for the three largest Internet
poker companies.Prosecutors had alleged he falsely told poker players their
money would be safe. But they said nearly $300 million owed to
players worldwide was missing.His lawyers said previously that he was helping
recover money.
$168 billion-- The estimated cost of compliance to American taxpayers in
2010, including tax preparation fees, hours worked and other costs, according
to the IRS.Its D-Day for President Obamas health law as millions of
American tax filers face the deadline for reporting their status under Obamas
new entitlement program and their vulnerability to new taxes used to fund
it.Americans have been paying the biggest new taxes associated with the
law since the beginning of the year: a .9 percent income tax
and a 3.8 percent tax on investment income, both for top earners.While
the estimated cost of those taxes is $318 billon over the next
decade, like this years other big tax hike, the 48 percent jump
in the payroll tax rate for all workers, they occur automatically and
dont create sticker shock except for those who count every penny in
every paycheck.Americans are also already living with two other costly tax
increases in the law.Those facing huge medical bills were previously able
to deduct any expenses above 7.5 percent of their annual income. Thats
now 10 percent. This is a relatively small number of people, mostly
with serious illnesses, and the pinch wont come until they file their
taxes next year.The other change is a new cap on health savings
accounts, now set at $2,500. But consumers already got that word during
the enrollment period for their health plans at the end of last
year. Many will pay higher taxes, but in small sums mostly. (T

Florida residents are being warned to be on the lookout for one
of the world's most destructive invasive species: the giant African land
snail, which can grow as big as a rat.The huge mollusks were
first spotted in Florida in 2011, and their numbers are growing, Reuters
reports. More than 1,000 are being caught each week in Miami-Dade County
and more will continue to emerge from hibernation in the coming weeks.The
snails can gnaw through stucco and plastic, and attack "over 500 known
species of plants ... pretty much anything that's in their path and
green," Denise Feiber, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services, told Reuters.In some Caribbean countries, such as
Barbados, which are overrun with the creatures, the snails' shells blow
out tires on the highway and turn into hurling projectiles from lawnmower
blades, while their slime and excrement coat walls and pavement."It becomes
a slick mess," Feiber saidA typical snail can produce about 1,200 eggs
a year and the creatures are a particular pest in homes because
of their fondness for stucco, devoured for the calcium content they need
for their shells.The snails also carry a parasitic rat lungworm that can
cause illness in humans, including a form of meningitis, Feiber said, although
