With more than 30 marathons being held this weekend alone and
big events on the horizon, officials around the world are boosting security
efforts in the wake of the fatal bomb blasts that shook Boston's
race.Britain was it was making last-minute efforts to tighten measures for
former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral on Wednesday at St. Paul's
Cathedral, which is to be attended by hundreds of diplomats and dignitaries,
including Queen Elizabeth II and Price Harry.Russian sports officials said
Tuesday they will beef up security in preparation for the Winter Olympics
and other events.Police in some major U.S. cities were monitoring landmarks,
government buildings, transit hubs and sporting events. Law enforcement
agencies also urged the public via Twitter and Facebook to report suspicious
activity to the police."No matter how many days, months or years pass
without a major terrorist attack, it only takes one such attack to
bring us back to the cruel reality," Interpol chief Ron Noble told
The Associated Press early Tuesday, saying police would be on high alert.Although
security has been increased at some U.S. and European landmarks, overall
terror threat levels have remained unchanged in contrast to other
recent bombings and t
rtation officials at airports
and train stations around the country also reported stepped up security.
In Washington, transit officials said in a Twitter message they knew of
no specific or credible threat to the city's subway system, but "extra
officers are on duty for increased security" anyway. It was the same
case in New Jersey, where the state's transit agency said it was
in operating "a state of heightened alert.""While there has been no specific
threat made to our transit system at this time, NJ Transit police
have deployed both uniformed and plain clothed officers to further patrol
our system and keep our customers safe," the agency said in a
statement.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">The Federal Aviation Administration created a no-fly zone over the site
of two explosions at the annual Boston marathon on Monday, and briefly
ordered flights bound for Boston's Logan International Airport held on the
ground at airports around the country.About an hour after the explosions
the FAA issued a notice to pilots that a no-fly zone with
a 3.5-mile radius has been created over 811 Boylston Street. The zone
was later reduced in a subsequent notice to a 2.3-mile radius. The
zone is limited to flights under 3,000 feet in altitude, which is
lower than most airliners would fly except when taking off or landing. The
no-fly zone was effective immediately, and will remain in effect until further
notice, the agency said. Pilots planning flights are urged to call their
local flight service station. In order to prevent planes from violating the
no-fly zone, the FAA briefly held planes bound for Logan around the
country on the ground while air traffic procedures at the airport were
reconfigured to bring planes in from the northeast and send them out
to the southeast over Boston harbor.Security for outbound international
flights at Logan has been stepped up in the wake of the
bombings, federal law enforcement officials said. Numerous runners were
expected to leave Boston after race, and the additional security has been
added as a precaution, they said. The officials requested anonymity because
they weren't authorized to speak publicly.Transpo

the blue, red and white-ribboned medal was to be awarded to individuals
for "extraordinary achievement" related to a military operation that occurred
after Sept. 11, 2001. But it does not require the recipient to
risk his or her life to get it.Over the last decade of
war, remotely piloted Predator and Reaper drones have become a critical
weapon to gather intelligence and conduct air strikes against terrorists
or insurgents around the world. They have been used extensively on the
battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in strikes in Pakistan,
Yemen and northern Africa.Over the same time, cyber attacks have become
a growing national security threat, with Panetta and others warning that
the next Pearl Harbor could well be a computer-based assault. The Bronze
Star is the fourth-highest combat decoration and rewards meritorious service
in battle, while the Silver Star is the third-highest combat award given
for bravery. The Purple Heart is ranked just below the Bronze Star.Several
other awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, are also
ranked higher than the Silver Star, but are not awarded for combat. In
addition to veterans' concerns, there is a practical side to the rankings
for currently serving troops. There are grades of medals -- commendation,
merit, distinguished -- that affect promotions for those still in uniform.
Each grade gives troops a certain number of points neede
