To jump in again with another bit of hack history, the smoot marks
*were* in the way of construction projects at least once and I think
twice. The Mass Ave bridge was completely renovated about 20 years
ago, and I think had some major construction before then. The
construction crews did the north- and southbound sides separately, and
I'm told they transferred the marks in the process.
That doesn't really make a difference, though. I agree that it's not
wise to say just because that particular hack/frat hazing/whatever was
preserved, others should be too. Hacks are temporary by nature, and
when one sticks around longer, it makes me smile - but that doesn't
mean they all should.
