Top-ranking lawmakers on both sides of the aisle declared Thursday that
the "red line" in Syria has been crossed, calling for "strong" U.S.
and international intervention after administration officials revealed the
intelligence community believes chemical weapons were used.Sen. John McCain,
R-Ariz., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate intelligence
committee, were among those urging swift action.McCain, who has long called
for more involvement in Syria, voiced concern that the administration would
use "caveats" to avoid acting on the new intelligence. He said America's
enemies are paying "close attention" to whether the U.S. follows through,
as the White House signaled it wanted to see more proof before
responding to the new information."I worry that the president and the administration
will use these caveats as an excuse not to act right away
or act at all," McCain told Fox News. "The president clearly stated
that it was a red line and that it couldn't be crossed
without the United States taking vigorous action."He called for the U.S.
to help establish a no-fly zone and "safe zone" in Syria, as
well as provide weapons to the "right people."Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel
first revealed the intelligence assessment, which was detailed in a letter
to select members of Congress, while speaking to reporters on a visit
to Abu Dhabi. The administration then released those letters, which said
U.S. intelligence determined
and 1,600 rounds per officer,
while the U.S. Army goes through roughly 350 rounds per soldier.He noted
that is "roughly 1,000 rounds more per person.""Their officers use what
seems to be an exorbitant amount of ammunition," he said.Nick Nayak, chief
procurement officer for the Department of Homeland Security, did not challenge
Chaffetz's numbers.However, Nayak sought to counter what he described as
several misconceptions about the bullet buys.Despite reports that the department
was trying to buy up to 1.6 billion rounds over five years,
he said that is not true. He later clarified that the number
is closer to 750 million.He said the department, on average, buys roughly
100 million rounds per year.He also said claims that the department is
stockpiling ammo are "simply not true." Further, he countered claims that
the purchases are helping create broader ammunition shortages in the U.S.The
department has long said it needs the bullets for agents in training
and on duty, and buys in bulk to save money.While Democrats likened
concerns about the purchases to conspiracy theories, Republicans raised
concern about the sheer cost of the ammunition."This is not about conspiracy
theories, this is about good government," Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said.Rep.
Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who chairs the full Oversight and Government Reform
Committee, said he suspects rounds are being stockpiled, and then either

allegedly impregnated four prison guardsMyFoxDC.comA Maryland gang member
is accused of running a scheme to smuggle contraband into prison by
"corrupting" 13 female prison guards from behind bars, four of whom he
impregnated.A federal indictment says Tavon White has been charged in the
plot to smuggle drugs, cell phones and other contraband into the Baltimore
jail and other corrections facilities, along with the prison guards, six
of his fellow inmates and five others with gang ties who allegedly
operated outside the jails.The indictment also says the ring involved sex
between the inmates and guards, which led to four of the officers
becoming pregnant by White, the leader of a jailhouse gang called the
Black Guerrilla Family.White is accused of "corrupting" the female officers
