in the Islamists' favor.Younger journalists staged a sit-in, complete with
a tent, in the paper's lobby and demanded his removal. The new editor,
Abdel-Nasser Salama, fired some reformists appointed since Mubarak's fall
and brought back editors who had been pushed into retirement.Still, the
Brotherhood was less successful than the military in dominating the state
media. There were flashes of resistance. In one case, a presenter on
state TV ended his newscast by sarcastically thanking the presidency for
providing the material. Another pulled out a shroud on air and pronounced
she was ready to die rather than obey Brotherhood directives. With the military
now in charge, these qualms have disappeared and state media resumed lockstep
support for those in charge.Al-Ahram editors saw the direction the wind
was blowing even before Morsi's exit. On July 1, the day after
the first massive rallies against the president, the paper's front-page
blared, "Morsi: Quit or Be Forced to Quit."Hammamo and other staffers saw
that as a sure sign that the military, about to make its
move, had told the paper's management to fall in line."The editor-in-chief
wouldn't have put this if he didn't have direct information," she said."It
is human nature," she said. "They will be with whoever is the
winner."

total of 650,000 civilian employees are now being furloughed at U.S. military
bases in response to sequester cuts -- but the Department of Defense
is still spending millions to protect fuzzy critters.Joint Base Lewis-McChord
(JBLM) in Washington state just received a $3.5 million department grant
to purchase land around the base in an effort to protect the
Mazama pocket gopher, a species that has not even been listed as
endangered or threatened. The expense is not sitting well with furloughed
workers."That really makes me mad that they would do that," said Matt
Hines, one of 10,000 civilian employees forced to take a 20 percent
pay cut. "I'm all for saving animals, but at what cost?"Under REPI
(Readiness and Environmental Protection Initiative), the Department of Defense
and other federal agencies have spent $397 million to protect 264,000 acres
around bases since 2003.Sarah Hamman, from the Center for National Lands
Management, has been tracking the Mazama pocket gopher in the prairie land
around JBLM and says the military's involvement has been critical."The Department
of Defense is a really important partner in this process in terms
of providing the funding and providing the land for these species," Hamman
said.In addition to the Mazama pocket gopher, environmentalists say the
purchase of 2,600 acres of prairie land around JBLM will also help

reverse a policy that currently says the only way a media organization
would be told of a subpoena is if a deputy attorney general
determines doing so would not pose a "substantial" threat to the probe.Under
the change, media organizations would be notified unless the attorney general
determines that doing so would pose a threat to the probe. Also, media
organizations would be notified no matter what after 90 days, officials
said.Aside from the Fox News case, the department drew complaints from media
organizations after it secretly obtained two months of phone records from
Associated Press lines.Officials also told Fox News that going forward,
the department will release annual stats showing the number of times DOJ
sought warrants and subpoenas for media outlets."This is as far as the
department can go on its own until Congress passes the media shield
legislation," a department official said.Fox News' Jake Gibson contributed

it's useless: This move targets the hip flexors, which are not involved
in abdominal development, says Muelrath. "It also creates a lot of stress
on the spine."What to do instead: Target abdominal muscles by working to

floor and prop yourself up on your forearms; extend your legs behind
you until your body is parallel to the floor. Engage your core
