In this June 10, 2013 file photo, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan,
with Senate President John Cullerton looking on at left, speaks to reporters
after a meeting with Gov. Pat Quinn in Chicago.APShown here is former
Metra CEO Alex Clifford.FNCA former Chicago-area executive is blowing the
whistle in the latest case to showcase what is derisively known as
the "Illinois way" -- politicians' practice of doing business by dishing
out favors to friends who contribute generously to their campaigns. This
time, a top-ranking Democrat has been implicated. The case involves Illinois'
most powerful Democratic leader -- state House Speaker Michael Madigan --
and the former head of the Chicago area's commuter rail service, Metra.
In a rare move earlier this week, Metra's ex-CEO Alex Clifford came
forward publicly to reveal specific details about how he says he was
forced out of his lucrative job after refusing to cave to political
pressure.Clifford, who was hired from California in 2001, testified during
a recent Regional Transportation Authority board meeting in Chicago. For
two hours he spoke openly about what he calls serious "ethical and
moral character flaws" from people who practice the "Illinois way" of doing
business, including Madigan.Clifford claims Madigan specifically wanted
a pay raise for a Metra employee, Patrick Ward, who has been
a generous contributor to Madigan's campaign, according to state records.
Clifford testified: "What
of the
things he said to investigators made us go back today," the mayor
said. The police, FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the
Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department went through yards and abandoned houses
over about three blocks Saturday and used dogs trained to find cadavers.
They planned to expand the search Sunday. The neighborhood in East Cleveland,
which has some 17,000 residents, has many abandoned houses and authorities
want to be thorough, the mayor said."Hopefully, we pray to God, this
is it," he said. The Cleveland area has had its share of gruesome
news in recent years. In May, three women who separately vanished a
decade ago were found captive in a run-down house. Ariel Castro, a
former school bus driver, has been charged with nearly 1,000 counts of
kidnap, rape and other crimes.Castro is accused of repeatedly restraining
the women, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to
a bedroom heater or inside a van. The charges say one of
the women tried to escape and he assaulted her with a vacuum
cord around her neck. He also fathered a daughter with one captive,
authorities said.He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

that she had received "credible evidence" that the mayor had harassed more
than one woman and called on both Filner to resign and the
city council to remove Filner from office if he would not go.The
next day, Filner publicly apologized for inappropriate behavior, but denied
the sexual harassment charges and asked that San Diego's voters "give me
an opportunity to prove I am capable of change, so that the
vision I have for our city's future can be realized."In the days
since, former supporters have come forward with sexual harassment and groping
allegations against Filner, to the extent that the Mayor has been asked
by the city's chief operating officer not to meet with any women
behind closed doors. The San Diego Sheriff's Office hotline for claims against
Filner can be reached by dialing 619-481-0220.Click here for more from UTSanDiego.com

colonial perception of a jury as standing up for what is the
right thing to do, not for what is the correct, case-specific application
of a certain law to a certain body of evidence.Meanwhile, there was
no justice for Zimmerman in the media. Too many reporters wrongly made
the case all about race. That narrative was unfair to Zimmerman. But
some in the media found it too easy to impose a racial
framework in which Zimmerman became a white racist attacking a black teen.In
fact, Zimmerman, who has a Peruvian mother and American white father, fits
the bill of what is usually described as Hispanic.People of all colors
have racial attitudes. The idea of racial stereotyping and fear of blacks
by Hispanics, Asians and other minorities seems beyond comprehension to
some journalists but it is real.To make the connection between black men
and crime is not evidence of racism. As Jason Riley, who is
African-American, wrote in the Wall Street Journal this week there is a
disturbing high rate of convictions of black men for violent crime in
America. So, lets not tell lies in an attempt to claim race
is not an issue. Americans, black and white, are all conscious of
race, the history of racial division in our country and the painful
curves it continues to throw at us all.As part of a neighborhood
watch program Zimmerman is assumed to have on the lookout for suspicious
characters for all races. But once he saw the person in the
