it is also a gigantic backward step in this world of trying to integrate
electronic spending systems. we first try to move forward in trying to get
other businesses to accept techcash (yay for some, and if there is hope of
getting shaw's on it too, even better). then MIT tries to go backward by
splitting that up.
seriously, if this were heaven, techcash would be integrated with the
charliecards too and one should be able to prox-card-tap their student ID
on any MBTA station, or use a RFID MBTA card to pay at MIT. businesses
over the next 20 years would be adopting RFID readers with a central
payment system for the greater boston area, and it would all be part of
one account that could be managed by a university or by a bank. MIT ID
cards would speak the same protocol as Harvard and BU cards and work
interchangeably on each others' campuses and on the T.
some parts of the world have had limited success in such scales of integration.
understandably, this place has no hope for that, but at least there is
techcash, and it's up to the user to decide how they spend their money.
and now we go backward with dining dollars, so that just even MIT has not
one but TWO payment accounts per person. the fact that you need a
library copy card in addition - that they don't take techcash - is bad
enough too.
