GRANTS PASS, Ore. Wildfires burning in Oregon, Idaho and Montana are
taxing national firefighting resources and helping to push spending past
$1 billion for the year. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise upped
the national wildfire preparedness level Tuesday to the highest level for
the first time in five years. The center lists two central Idaho wildfires
as the country's top priorities, helping provide crews and resources for
the Beaver Creek fire, which forced the evacuation of 1,250 homes in
the resort area of Ketchum and Sun Valley and has cost nearly
$12 million so far.Fire center official Steve Gage says they can't fill
the requests for crews and equipment for all 48 fires that remain
uncontained around the country.___Keith Ridler contributed to this report
from Boise, Idaho.
http://www.facebook.com/denver.booneIs a cartoon-like college mascot reminiscent
of Daniel Boone -- right down to the legendary coonskin cap --
racist, sexist or otherwise offensive?Officials at the University of Denver
seem to think so. Theyve announced they wont reinstate Denver Boone, who
was retired in 1998 as mascot for the UD Pioneers, despite calls
to bring him back.Boone originally had been replaced by a red-tailed hawk
named Ruckus but the bird never soared high with the student body
and was scrapped in 2007, leaving the school without a mascot. Fast
forward and the school decided to put together a committee last spring
to determine the new mascot, but Boone was not even considered.Boone was
a polarizing figure that did not reflect the growing diversity of the
UD community, but rather was an image that many women, persons of
color, international students and faculty members found difficult to relate
to as defining the pioneering spirit, Chancellor Robert Coombe said in a
March letter to the school community.University officials also claim that
Boone was not up for consideration because of a consensus by the
student body that it wanted an entirely new mascot despite numerous
Facebook postings to the contrary. It was really about moving forward, Theresa
Mueller, a spokeswoman for the University of Denver, told FoxNews.com. The
students wanted a new mascot and didnt want to look towards the
past.Mueller added that they intend togi

by it and knew that it needed to be shared, MaryLynne, 39,
Stella told FoxNews.com. And awareness is key to change, and so we
thought it would be a good thing to put it up and
have people see how disturbing it was.VIDEO: Hate letter aimed at autistic
teenThe letter demands that Begley take action over her "retarded" son Max.
The Ontario mother said she had no idea who would send such
a hateful letter, which left her family shocked and devastated. She tearfully
told City News: "Who would do this to a child?"The letter goes
on to criticize Begley for allowing Max to play outside and says:
"That noise he makes when he is outside is DREADFUL!!!!!!!!!! It scares
the hell out of my normal children!!!!!!!"The letter also tells Karla that
she has a "retarded kid" and "should deal with it properly"."What right
do you have to do this to hard working people!!!!!!!! I HATE
people like you who believe, just because you have a special needs
kid, you are entitled to special treatment!!! GOD!!!!!!"The writer finishes
by demanding the family "go live in a trailer in the woods
or something with your wild animal kid!!!" and asks the family to
do the right thing and move or "euthanize him. Either way, we
are ALL better off!!!"Though MaryLynne said she hasnt seen Max in a
while, she spoke highly of Max, Karla, who suffers from multiple sclerosis,
and the entire Begley family.(Max) is just a sweetheart. He loves life,
and hes a happy boy.
the latest problem
prompted the ship to return to Ketchikan after it had left the
port on Sunday. He said the Coast Guard on Monday ordered the
vessel to stay put until the issue was fixed. He said the
agency was working with Celebrity Cruises "to put the safety of the
crew and the passengers first, ensure that they are protected and ensure
that the vessel is capable of safely getting underway."The cruise company
said engineers, consultants from the motor's manufacturer and the cruise
line's marine operations team had been working "around the clock" to resolve
the issue. The president and CEO of the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau, Patti
Mackey, said some restaurants and bars in town got a boost Sunday
night when the cruise ship returned. Cruise ships typically aren't in town
that late, and "that was a pleasant up-shot for them, anyway," she
said. She said the tour company that manages transfers for the cruise line
also was busy contacting local tour companies to ask about extra space
they might have for the held-over passengers. Some passengers just walked
around town and shopped, she said."It's not the ideal situation for those
folks who really wanted to see all the stops on the itinerary,
but we're trying to do our best to make them feel comfortable
and welcome," Mackey said of the community.
