Iraqi police in Mosul say 31 militants and 10 police have
been killed in clashes since late Wednesday, marking a sharp increase in
the death toll in the northern city. Two police officials, who provided the
casualty figures, say the fighting began Wednesday night and had died down
by late Thursday morning. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because
they weren't authorized to release the information. The fighting comes amid
growing unrest in Iraq since fighting broke out in the northern town
of Hawija during a security crackdown on a protest encampment on Tuesday.
All five living past and present U.S. presidents gathered in Dallas for
the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum Thursday,
an event that saw the men share a rare bond that transcends
partisan differences."There was a time in my life when I wasn't likely
to be found at a library, much less found one," Bush quipped,
before thanking his predecessors and successor for the "kind words" and
the "examples you set."Bush thanked his mother Barbara Bush for teaching
him to live life to the fullest, and his father, the 41st
president, for "teaching me how to be a president ... and how
to be a man."- President Obama on President Bush"Forty-one, it is awesome
that you are here today," he said, drawing a smile from his
88-year-old father, who has battled health problems in recent months.Earlier,
President Obama noted that the exclusive group of current and former presidents
is often viewed as a club, but he said it is "more
of a support group.""No matter how much you think you're ready to
assume the office of the president, its impossible to understand the nature
of the job until its yours," Obama said. "The first thing I
found in that desk was a letter from George. He knew that
I would come to learn what he had learned. That being president
is a humbling job."We know President Bush the man," Obama said. "To
know the man is to like the man. Because hes comfortable in
his own skin. He knows who he is. He doesnt put on

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau A military tribunal in Guinea-Bissau has convicted
an army captain of leading a failed coup last year.Pansau Ntchama was
sentenced on Thursday to serve five years in prison after being found
guilty of treason and using illegal weapons.Ntchama was the ex-bodyguard
of Guinea-Bissau's former army chief of staff.Authorities say he led gunmen
who attacked a military base near the airport in Bissau in October
2012. The army fought back and the coup failed.Troubled Guinea-Bissau has
had so many coups and countercoups that no elected leader has been
able to complete his term in the nearly four decades since the
country won its independence from Portugal. The most recent coup occurred
in April 2012, just weeks before the presidential runoff election.
SANTIAGO, Chile Chilean police have arrested four people accused of burning
a baby alive in a ritual.Police said Thursday that they burned the
days-old baby in a bonfire in November because the leader of the
rite believed that the end of the world was near and the
toddler was the antichrist. The mother of the baby allegedly had approved
the sacrifice.Authorities say the 12-member sect was formed in 2005 and
was led by 35-year-old Ramon Gustavo Castillo, who remains at large.Police
say Castillo was last seen traveling to Peru to buy ayahuasca, a
hallucinogenic brew plant that he used to control the members of the
rite.
