Windows 3.1/95 are probably not, although NT is. And even 3.1 and 95
might be stable enough for "single use" environments. We have run
KDCs on all of those platforms (as well as OS/2), although we do not
presently ship product for them. I think you'd be amazed at just how
fast and stable a KDC a cheap PC-based NT system makes.
Before dismissing these too readily, consider that there are many,
many more of those systems out there than Unix systems. And that
those systems are key to broadening the acceptance and use of
Kerberos--without which Kerberos will suffer the same fate as other
lab rats.
To be accepted, Kerberos needs to be accessible not only to clients,
but also to those responsible for the KDC. Very, very few
nstallations are going to invest in a Unix system (including training)
solely to run Kerberos. That is unfortunate both for those
installations suffering with second-rate security, and for those that
have invested in the success of Kerberos.
