Prior to that message in the log should be one that shows the original response
to the client. If that original response (the initial authentication request)
failed, and the client is not seeing it, or doesn't know what to do with it,
things won't get very far.
I'm not sure what Xyplex's current firmware rev. is, but they had a patch that
fixed an ASN.1 decode problem, which could cause the client to fail to properly
decode a message from the KDC. That problem was intermittent also, and could
explain this problem.
