certainly before working too hard on a workaround, see if a current
solaris release has the problem.  Athena may be running 2.4, but the
rest of the world isn't -- 2.5.1 has been current for a while.
(unfortuately the solaris machines at cygnus-east haven't been
upgraded either, but it's happenning soon.)

As for the impact:  I'm pretty sure that krb4_convert is controlled
from krb5.conf, so it's not a big deal -- certainly not to require
multiple binaries.

Also, re timeout: krb524init already *does* not only a timeout but a
fallback to slave servers, just like kinit would (checks the same
machines even..)
