We have three options:

1. Have no quoting character.  If you want a slash as part of a
   component, you lose.

2. Use \ as the quoting character.  If you want this on the command
   line, count carefully.

3. Use a non-standard quoting character.  Now users have to remember
   which package uses which quoting character.
