I don't want to be too much of a pedant, but this one gets misquoted so
often...  The original actually goes:

"The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal
vigilance"  

It goes on: "...which condition if he break, servitude is at once the
consequence of his crime, and the punishment of his guilt"  (John
Philpott Curran, speech on the Right of election of the Mayor of Dublin,
1790).

Curran was right on, methinks.

And while we're on quotations, here's a goodie from Joseph Conrad
(1907): "the terrorist and the policeman both come from the same
basket".
