'New York'. Gemplus (a crad manufacturer) has an ad in the July Mondex
magazine on page 20 about the trial in New York.
This is from the Mondex website:
Mondex was launched on 6 October 1997 in Manhattan's upper West Side.
The launch forms part of the New York Smart Card program, - a joint
venture between MasterCard, Visa, Citibank and Chase Manhattan Bank which
is intended to introduce the concept of electronic cash to consumers and
merchants in the New York area. Electronic cash smartcards such as Mondex
are beginning to be introduced around the world as a more efficient
alternative to physical cash; for use in everyday shopping and as a future
payment mechanism in a wide variety of areas such as the Internet and
'pay-per-view' TV.
