Spring Hopes Eternal
Say what you will about Attorney General Janet Reno, but you have to
admit that the steely former prosecutor can stand up under fire.
Perhaps not having a visible sense of humor helps? This morning Rep.
David Skaggs (D-Colo.) asked her when the different factions within
the Clinton administration might agree on what Congress should do with
encryption. "I think we have made very substantial progress," Reno
said, presumably referring to the FBI's attempts to ban the stuff
outright. Skaggs pressed her for a date: "Before the vernal equinox?"
Reno demurred: "I forget when the vernal equinox is." She went on to
ask the House Appropriations Subcommittee for "$64 million in
increased funding to expand efforts to protect the nation's critical
infrastructures from cyber attacks and to combat cyber crimes."
Perhaps Reno was thinking ahead -- and contemplating hiring additional
G-men to round up Americans who distribute unapproved encryption
software. --By Declan McCullagh/Washington
