ASIO granted wider wiretapping powers

I just heard on the radio (MIX FM, Sydney, 7am news Sat. 2nd) that the
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation has been granted much wider
powers to conduct wiretaps and other forms of surveillance on the
Australian public, in the leadup to the 2000 Olympics. What's the bet that
the powers are not going to disappear in 2001? That they are not limited to
the Sydney area? That the restrictions don't mention the olympic games?
There was no public leadup to this, that I am aware of.
