Dear All,
I have started archiving the traffic on this list.
This is quite unofficial, and not endorsed by Perry,
C2 or anybody. Before I make the archive searchable
I wanted to have a few words with you, and get some feedback.
Exclusions:
I am providing for posts to be excluded from the
archive, for anybody who prefers that. This can be done
per-post with a NOARCHIVE header line, or per sender.
Per Post: perl match in header: /^[^: ]no.?archive:/
Per Sender: mail me and ask to be listed in the exclude.sender file.
Deletion of existing files is always possible if you can convince
me to delete one of _your_ posts.
Since these options are open to you I'm assuming anybody who does not
use them is happy to have their mail archived. One reason for this
message is to allow you to request deletions before opening day.
{exclude.byname
A less extreme step for people with privacy in mind is making
posts not searchable by the sendername. Mail me if you want this.
It gains very little as somebody could collect miniheaders from
many posts and search them to find all your posts.
}
Corrections
If you think a correcting annotation to a post is called for you
can try convincing me. This could be hard if it is not your post.
Anybody who makes a nuisance of himself stands a good chance of
getting into my killfile.
Disclaimers
Completeness is not guaranteed. In fact the archive has only just
started in earnest, and I have a backlog of files from 19 Dec 1996
to work in those I think worth saving. Anybody willing to supply copies
of posts before 20 Dec 1996, please get in touch.
I will try hard not to be misleading. Records will be accurate
to the best of my ability. I have corrected some typos
belonging to Bruce Schneier yesterday (in unsigned mail).
This service is free, and may be discontinued. You get what you
pay for. Changes I consider important will be announced in advance
where possible.
Indexing
An index of posts is being built as they arrive.
All index fields are case-insensitive, being converted early
to lowercase. The post itself is stored under its Message-Id.
It can be found using any of:
sender: test@nowhere.nul
date: 25feb1997
month: feb1997
keywords: md5 hash collision
The means of following replied-to mail is: this mail will
tell you if it's a reply to that mail, and what other mails have
replies to this mail.
No grepping of posts will be provided. It's a small archive now,
but I'm thinking ahead. In the very long run it might even be compressed.
Searching
This will be by mail autoresponder. It will accept commands to
search each of the index fields. I will announce details later,
after I've written it - which may be be influenced by comments from you.
How You Can Help
Give your messages keywords. ('cryptography' is probably a bad choice.)
perl format in header or body: s/^[^: ]*keywords?: *(.)/$1/;
When referring to a previous message give some/all of
Message-Id, sender, date (or reply instead of starting a fresh message).
Normal common sense applies in choosing how much to quote.
Forgeries
If anyone can advise me on how to detect forged mail I'd appreciate it.
My concerns are archiving stuff that was never really on the list, and
sending autoresponses to people who don't want them.
Other Archives
I do not know of any other archives for this list. I am perfectly
happy for other people to run an archive in any sensible way they choose.
Your comments are welcome.
