I have been invited to testify in favor of the Goodlatte crypto
deregulation bill (HR 695) next Thursday (3/20/97) in a hearing of the
House Judiciary Committee, subcommittee on Courts and Intellectual
Property. The hearing begins at 9:30 AM Eastern time.

I do not know if C-SPAN is going to cover this event. Based on my
previous experience (I appeared before the Burns committee in the
Senate last summer) I won't know if C-SPAN will be there until that
morning when the cameras either are or aren't there.

In any event, I will (again) hold up my copy of Bruce Schneier's book
Applied Cryptography, along with a floppy disk of the crypto source
code contained in the book, and explain that according to the
government the book is freely exportable while the floppy is not --
despite the content being identical.
